Screen shot 1
Virtual tape simulation identifies requirements for supporting a workload on VTS. The size of the TVC can be specified to identify rates of restaging of data at specific sizes (see screen shot 1).

The information for VTS simulations is quite different from a tape to DASD simulation. Here we present data on the peak hour utilization of the TVC (see screen shot 2, 3 & 4), the recall rates (see screen shot 5), and additional data. The screens will identify how a workload will perform with different amounts of TVC storage. This will provide the information required to properly size the TVC.

It may be advisable to exclude some types of data from a VTS simulation. Products like DFHSM and ADSM optimize their use of tape and it may be advisable to exclude them from a VTS system. Tape stacking software like carts should always be excluded from simulations. It will not be needed on VTS and will distort the filter building process.

By running simulations on specific UCB addresses and high level qualifiers you can identify the impact of moving a workload from one VTS to another to balance workloads.
