Data is first simulated by size to identify small data sets (see screen shot 1) that can potentially be placed on DASD or Virtual Tape. This simulation is based on user provided input parameters for data set size (see screen shot 2). The small size may be set to include all data sets, it is mainly used to identify data that will be simulated on DASD or VTS.

Tape size simulation data is presented by month, day, and listing detail. The design of the system permits a user to easily go from displaying a gross level of resources required to a detail level that identifies the specific data sets used during a period in the simulation.

This initial simulation provides gross level data on the potential candidates for DASD or Virtual Tape.

Data may be simulated for specific high level qualifiers, filter lists, jobs or by type; e.g. multi-data-set volumes. Data may also be excluded by filter list and type. This provides the ability to produce capacity planning data for specific categories, e.g. data in filter lists and/or new data in Virtual Tape subsystems compared to data from previous simulations.

The simulations can also be customized to meet local conditions.
